As promised in my Camp NaNoWriMo halfway point post, here is an update on whether I achieved my stated goal of an outline of at least 5000 words. And just to save you the cliffhanger, no I don’t.
In an update that will be news to pretty much nobody, I didn’t exactly hit my goal. Though I am closer now than I was before, so there has been definite progress and I am almost confident I can get an outline finished by the end of the month.
So, what do I have? I have parts four and five fully outlined. Without diving too far into spoiler territory, part five is the climactic showdown, the big blowout at the end of the story. It wasn’t too hard to get that down to be honest, since I knew who all the key players are, and the parts they play in the final battle. Working out what happens to each character in the denouement was pretty simple too, mostly extrapolating from their internal desires and wants.
The part I am finding hard to nail down is the beginning. I have a partial idea of where everyone starts out, but bringing them together to kick off the second act is proving difficult.
And then there’s the big middle portion I’ve not even touched yet. But that bit has pirates and naval battles and sea monsters, so I imagine it’ll turn out alright in the end.
Only a short update this time, but that’s mostly because I’m itching to reopen my Google doc until I’ve got the whole thing figured out.
