Writing Check In: March 2016

I’ll be doing this once a month around the start of a new month as a quick check in on my progress with my first novel draft as a means of keeping me on track to deliver a decent word count.

So, important part out of the way first, the novel currently sits at 120,049 words as of the end of March. Which means I have written I’m not sure how much last month, because this is the first time I’m doing this. But I took a few days off writing in the middle there, so I’m pretty sure I haven’t maintained the pace I would have liked.

As a fun aside, it was never intended to be this long. When I originally envisioned the project back last year, I thought the whole thing would cap out at around 100,000 words, but here I am 20,000 over the estimate and still not done with the second act.

The truth is, no matter how much I plan and how detailed the road map I set out for myself is, these things always seem to grow in scope and scale along the way. In the games industry it’s referred to as feature creep. New ideas come up during the process of building the thing. In games, it tends to be new gameplay opportunities, bigger levels etc. In my case, it’s characters and subplots gaining a foothold and demanding more page space and a bigger word count. For now I’m happy to just write as I go, sticking to my plan as a sort of rough guideline, but letting the story flow as feels best in the moment. It will be interesting to see how much gets removed in the editing process, which I hope to get onto before the end of the year.

Finally, some admin. I’ve been getting a lot of reading done so I’m hoping to get some posts up soon talking about the various books I’ve read in some sense. Still figuring out how I’m going to break that one down. I also plan on getting back to the David Lynch filmography posts soon, I’m aware the last one was quite some time ago, but it was watching Blue Velvet for the next post that sort of launched me into this whole novel thing to begin with, so you’ll have to excuse the tardiness. And finally, I haven’t forgotten Movie Madness. I have been watching every film on there as they come out, and as soon as I have some pairs to write about in a head to head format, I’ll get going on it. The Hateful Eight vs Creed should happen in fairly short order.
