Movie Madness is a feature wherein I pit my top sixteen most anticipated films of the year against each other in a bracketed single elimination tournament because top ten lists can sit and spin.

Writing Check In: May 2016

I’ll be doing this once a month around the start of a new month as a quick check in on my progress with my first novel draft as a means of keeping me on track to deliver a decent word count.

Cinéma Vérité currently stands at 129,093 words, which means in May I wrote 5,557 words. That averages to around 179 words a day, which is an improvement over last month’s total. Not quite where I wanted to get to, but progress is progress.

I have spent these last couple of months just writing two chapters (I couldn’t tell you what numbers, I haven’t been numbering them). Without giving away any huge plot details, the chapter I am currently working on is the huge one that will close out the book’s second act. It is the lowest point in the story. It’s the point where Han Solo gets captured by Jabba the Hutt and Luke Skywalker gets his hand cut off by his dad, if you will. As a result, this is actually the hardest part to write. I’ve become quite attached to these characters over the last eleven months or so, and putting them through hell isn’t the most fun part of the job.

The other thing I’ve become attached to is my working title of Cinéma Vérité. Given that it’s a story essentially about film and real life intersecting and overlapping, I worried at the time that it was a little on the nose. But I’ve grown so accustomed to using it, I imagine it may stay. Especially since the story has completely outgrown my other working title; The Last Picture House in Michigan. I’ll leave my options open in terms of not 100% locking in Cinéma Vérité until I know for sure, but for now it’s here to stay.

Movie Madness 2016 begins!

Top ten lists, right? They’re a bit dull, a bit overplayed, and if we’re honest, they save all the fun for one big push at the end of the year. I’ve been trying to figure out for a little while now how I can talk about things like movies and games throughout the year, without resorting to just writing a quick review of everything I watch or play. Especially in the case of movies, since working at a cinema, I get an opportunity to watch a lot of them. So, I’ve come up with something I want to try out throughout this year. I call it Movie Madness.
